Home Office Immigration System Statistics for the year ending June 2026 published 27 August 2026 show sponsored study visa grants fell 11.1% year on year. The UK-wide refusal rate now stands at 4.7% — just 0.3 percentage points below the new 5% BCA threshold. August 2026 improved to -17.3% — the best monthly performance since January. The trajectory is moving in the right direction. August 2026 — Visa Applications Down 17.3% But Trend Improving
September 2026
Home Office data published 10 September 2026 shows sponsored study visa applications in August 2026 reached 99,500 — down 17.3% versus August 2025. This is the best monthly performance since January 2026 and continues a clear recovery from the April and May lows of -40%. Year to date applications are now down 22.4%. The September intake pipeline is smaller than 2025 but the trajectory is moving in the right direction.

International UCAS applications rose slightly to 53,740 from 52,640 — but most overseas students do not apply via UCAS. The UK government confirmed it remains committed to introducing an International Student Levy despite sector opposition. Implementation is planned for 1 August 2028 following two trial cycles in 2026/27 and 2027/28. Durham University Vice-Chancellor Karen O'Brien called the levy absolute insanity at a HEPI forum on 9 July. Legislation will be introduced in the next Finance Bill.

BriefingGraduate Route Cut to 18 Months from January 2027

The Home Office confirmed in legislation that the Graduate Route post-study work visa will be reduced from two years to 18 months for bachelor's and master's graduates applying from 1 January 2027. PhD graduates retain three years. Students applying before 31 December 2026 still receive the current two-year permission.
